John Hunter was an important 18^th-century Scottish surgeon who played a critical role in the development of the scientific method used in medicine. During his tenure in the Royal Society, he was considered the leading authority on the treatment of venereal diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis. He performed many experiments on sexually transmitted diseases; however, none of which were performed on himself.

His findings and treatment procedures were reported in his ‘Treatise on Venereal Diseases’ including the use of mercury and skin cauterization as cures. This work also made significant contributions to the practice of urological surgery.

This 1786 first edition was published in London and includes numerous full-page engravings!
