John Throsby was an 18th-century English historian known for his surveys of Leicester. Throsby served as Mayor of Leicester and gained was privy to much of the history and political growths of the English town, so much so, that he wrote numerous books on Leicester, most notably “History and Antiquities of the Ancient Town of Leicester”. This work, first published in 1791, describes the establishment of Leicester under King John, the building of churches, cathedrals, and hospitals, as well as biographies of Leicester earls and mayors.
