1792 American Revolution 1ed Portraits des Grands Hommes French Color Printing Franklin, Washington, French Revolution 136 Plates!
One of the earliest books to have engravings printed in color! Significant, in that, England had not yet begun attempts to print in color! A printing far beyond its years!
A first edition of a famous work in the history of color printing!
The second plate in this book holds important value to both French and American patriots. It is dedicated to “Independence des Etats-Unis” which commemorates the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (a treaty signed by King Louis XVI and Benjamin Franklin), and those Frenchmen who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Other illustrations depict French military battles, portraits of eminent Frenchmen, and scenes of political interactions with other countries such as Spain.
“The historical subjects tend to be military, but include such philosophical scenes as Fontenelle beside his telescope viewing the man in the moon, and an allegorical celebration – with the medallions of Franklin, Louis Seize and Washington – of American Independence.” (Franklin).
