1796 Attack on Age of Reason 1ed Watson Apology for BIBLE Anglican Church PAINE
“A man must blacken his own hands with charcoal, he must sweat over the furnace, and inhale many a noxious vapour, before he can become a chemist.”
― Richard Watson
Thomas Paine’s political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. In his book “The Age of Reason”, Paine defends the importance of deism within the confines of philosophy and politics. Paine attacked what he considered to be corruption within the Christian Church and wanted to disprove many of the teachings found in the Bible, particularly miraculous events.
After the initial release of ‘Age of Reason’, Anglican author and Bishop of Llandaff Richard Watson published a striking and direct attack on Paine. In “An Apology for the Bible”, Watson defended Protestant values and attacked Paine’s promotion of irreligion.
