“Liberty, equality, fraternity, or death; – the last, much the easiest to bestow, O Guillotine!”

Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

Auguste Danican was a French Brigadier General during the French Revolution. This memoir is a first-hand perspective of the happenings in the French army during the French Revolution. He denounced the National Convention of the French Republic and resigned in 1795 from his military duties, and sided with the Parisian resistance. He was charged with war crimes and was defeated by Napoleon Bonaparte. He eventually fled to England.
