1796 Nootka Crisis John Meares Voyages CHINA British Columbia SEA MONSTERS 3v
John Meares was an 18th-centry Irish explorer who was a notable fur trader with the East India Company. He based many of is voyages and ship out of European colonies in China. His most infamous voyage began in 1788 when he left China with two unregistered ships sailing the Portuguese flag each headed to the Nootka Sound in British Columbia. His arrival began what would be called the ‘Nootka Crisis’ – a political dispute between Spain, America, and England over local tribes and land.
The details of the event, from Meares perspective, were written in ‘Voyages from China to the Northwest Coast of America’. This 1796 Italian edition was published in Naples and features absolutely stunning engravings, including views of sea monsters and ships!
