A rare, 18th century Japanese woodblock print of “Kijin-Den” written by Koukei Ban and scholar, artist Miguma Katen. The Kijin-Den catalogues the eccentrics of the late 18th Century, a time of revival of the “bunjin” literati ideal in Japan. A collection of personal figures of all statuses and classes, such as scholars, prostitutes, monks, poets, poor farmers, doctors, lumberjacks, and more! This edition includes a biography of Enku, a Japanese Buddhist monk, poet and sculptor during the early Edo period.

 

This rare edition is written in the typical handwritten column format bound in the “fukurotoji” style (Keio) complete with illustrations throughout!
