First edition of the first complete account of Magellan!

Antonio Pigfetta was a 16th-century Italian explorer who famously accompanied Ferdinand Magellan on his expedition to the Spice Islands. During this voyage, Pigfetta kept a detailed journal of the events as well as first-hand accounts of the Cebuano language. This journal is the primary source for much of what is known today about Magellan and the first circumnavigation of the world. Curiously though, this journal was written in a combination of broken Venetian, Spanish, and Italian was first translated into Italian in Milan in 1800 by Carlo Amoretti.

This 1800 first edition is extremely valuable and desirable – a rare account of perhaps the most important expedition of the 16th-century. Prior to this edition, editors collected translations from various places and pieced together insufficient and “unsatisfactory” editions, according to Ebert. This work includes charming sketches of discoveries and events of the voyage including a small map at the beginning of the first chapter.
