1803 TURKEY 1ed Ottoman Empire Napoleon in EGYPT & Syria Wittman MAPS Plague
William Wittman’s “Travels in Turkey” is a fascinating, early 19th-century history of the Middle East, Syria, and Egypt. Published in 1803, this book covers the entirety of Wittman’s 1798-1802 Ottoman Empire expedition most of which was spent marching with the Ottoman Army against Napoleon in Egypt and Syria.
This book records the British fleet at Hellespont and various Greek islands and ancient cities such as Sestos and Troy, he describes religious celebrations such as Ramadan and Easter as well as Persian sultan birthdays, and so much more. One particularly interesting inclusion in this book is Wittman’s observations of the Plague and his numerous ideas of treating soldiers with the Plague.
Per Blackmer,
“Wittman was a member of the British military mission which joined the Turkish forces at Constantinople in 1799 and travelled overland to Egypt to take part in the campaign against the French … the costume plates, unsigned, are mostly of soldiers and military functionaries”
