Captain Philip Beaver was an 18^th-century Royal Navy officer who is best known for his colonization voyage to the island of Bulama. This 1792 voyage proved to be a complete failure – the colonists who survived were uninspired, unhealthy, and apathetic toward establishing a new colony and moved to nearby Sierra Leone.

Beaver’s book ‘African Memoranda’ is the captain’s account of the events on the ship as well as on the island of Bulama. This first edition includes two engravings of the ‘block house’ on the island. Interestingly, this book became a catalyst for abolishing African slave trade.
