1808 Thomas Shaw Travels Middle East Voyages Levant Egypt MAPS Jerusalem 2v SET
Thomas Shaw’s ‘Travels’ is a rare, detailed 18th-century travel account of voyages in the Middle East. Shaw was a relatively unknown English voyager from Oxford; however, his book which described his observations has since become an important work in understanding North Africa and the Mediterranean. He provides detailed descriptions of Egypt, Libya, Israel and the Holy Land, as well as countries of the Levant.
This 1808 two-volume edition includes impressive, full-page engravings – illustrations depicting Egyptian mummies, architecture, geography, and, of course, folding maps. The illustrations supplement Shaw’s studies on plants, birds, and animals.
According to Blackmer on Shaw,
“His work is valuable for its accurate descriptions of antiquities, geography & natural history he observed.”
Lowndes notes of this work,
“These Travels have been universally esteemed, not only for their accuracy and fidelity, but on account of the illustrations they contain of natural history, of the classic authors, and especially of the Scriptures.”
