John Evelyn was an English writer, gardener, and diarist. His diaries, or memoirs, are largely contemporaneous with those of the other noted diarist of the time, Samuel Pepys, and cast considerable light on the art, culture, and politics of his time. It was, however, his work “Sylva” that is considered one of the best. This treatise, more often known as “A Discourse of Forest Trees” is one of the most important works on forestry ever written.

In 1662, Evelyn presented a paper to the Royal Society concerning the depletion of England’s forests due to the logging and ship-building industries with the hopes of advocating for the restoration of the declining forests. Evelyn notes specific varieties of trees and provides direction on how to sustain them as well as providing instruction on how to appropriately cultivate trees rather than just cutting them down en masse.

This 1812 edition was published in York, representing the vast legacy that this book had more than 150 years after the first edition.
