1814 Ethan Allen 1ed Revolutionary War Prisoner Green Mountain Boys Montreal
Ethan Allen was an early American figure known for his involvement in the founding of the state of Vermont and the American Revolutionary War. During the 1775 attack on Montreal, Allen and many of the Green Mountain Boys were taken prisoner by the British army and forced into a two-year captivity on prison ships and in British-controlled jails.
After his release in 1778, Allen wrote and published a full account of his time in captivity – a work which showcased the brutal nature of British officers and the torturous circumstances which American soldiers endured as prisoners of war.
Allen’s prison narrative is among the most popular Revolutionary War accounts. The 1779 first edition is incredibly scarce and even 19th-century editions are considered highly desirable and valuable. This 1814 first Albany edition was published by Pratt and Clark.
