“The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.”

― Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince

Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most important figures in 15th- and early 16th-century Renaissance philosophy. His works helped define what has become political science. His most famous work “The Prince” has infamously coined the term ‘Machiavellianism’ regarding politics and dishonest politicians. It has often been considered the first work of modern philosophy, mostly because it conflicts so strongly with Catholic doctrines concerning politics and ethics at the time.

“The Art of War,” Machiavelli’s 1521 treatise on military science, was the only theoretical or historical work to be published during his lifetime. This book of ‘high military’ concepts discusses military discipline, civilian interactions, how to live without factions, how to define war, and how to conduct diplomacy during a time of war.

This rare 1815 1st American edition of Machiavelli features an ‘anonymous’ treatise on torpedo warfare written by and attributed to Robert Fulton. According to Sabin, because of the British naval interference with American commerce, Fulton was led to publish a work on torpedo warfare in 1810. This treatise is considered to be the first treaty of its kind describing exploding ships and water mines!
