French author and diplomat Francois Barbe-Marbois published an account of Clinton and Arnold’s plan. Marbois supported the American cause against the British noting that Arnold’s treachery was an attack on Enlightenment ideals that were prominent in France.
“Complot d’Arnold et de Sir Henry Clinton” was written to encourage the American cause. This 1816 first edition was published in Paris and includes the highly desirable map of the Hudson River and the forts near West Point.
