Rudolph Zacharias Becker was an 18^th-century German writer best known for his self-help book ‘Joy and Sorry in Mildheim’. This book propelled his fame throughout the German-speaking world, so much so that many of his other works proved to be popular from its success. One such work was his “Portraits of German Masters” –a collection of woodcut portraits and descriptions of famous German figures. This 1817 volume is perhaps the most important as it contains some of the most influential Reformation and Renaissance-era figures including Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Erasmus of Rotterdam, and Charles V Holy Roman Emperor.

The illustrations are especially desirable – many, huge portraits – from the art of Durer and Cranach.
