Maurice Keatinge was an early 19th-century Irish politician who is much better remembered for his world voyages. At the end of the 18th-century, Keatinge took a journey to France and Spain as well as Northern Africa into Morocco. The descriptions of France and Spain reflect similar late 18th-century voyage reports; however, it is his account of Morocco that stands out in this book. Keatinge provides curious anecdotes of the people and places in Morocco noting many of the European influences there – especially in the city of Merakish (Merrakesh).

Still, Keatinge’s account of Morocco opened English readers to the cultures and customs in North Africa including snake handlers, African poverty and beggars, Moroccan gardens and sanctuaries, Arabs and Moors, and even lingering effects of French naval campaigns against Moroccan pirates.

The illustrations throughout this book make it highly desirable as the views of Moroccan architecture are especially impressive.
