1817 Napoleonic WAR French Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte Waterloo 1st SUBMARINE
William Nicholson’s “History of the Wars” is an early 19th-century survey of the French Revolution and the events leading up to the revolution, as well as reports on the Napoleonic Wars following the French Revolution. Nicholson offers description of the War of the First Coalition with notes on important political and military figures. Though, perhaps the most noteworthy portion of the work is an extensive exposition on Napoleon’s escape from Elba and his ultimate defeat at Waterloo. In fact, this book was penned just months after the Battle of Waterloo – one of the earliest, illustrated books on the end Napoleon’s reign.
While the contents of this work are important, this particular work is best-recognized for being the first published work to describe the submarine. According to Sargent, this book describes a “diving boat which at Norfolk, tried to destroy the Ramillies”. (Sargent, p.25)
