In 1818, Captain James Bradley commanded his ship the Sally toward the North African coast, near Morocco and Algiers. The ship was wrecked, and Bradley’s wife Eliza was taken captive by local tribes and pirates. She was sold into slavery, tortured, exposed to malnutrition, and was abused by her African captors.

The events of her enslavement, and eventual rescue, were published in the 1820 book “Authentic Narrative of the Shipwreck and Sufferings of Mrs. Eliza Bradley”. This work not only provides first-hand accounts of the story but also early 19th-century descriptions of the Sahara Desert, Berber Arabs, and the rampant piracy occurring off the coasts of Africa in the early 19th-century.

This 1820 first edition of Eliza’s story was published in Boston by James Walden and includes full-page illustrations.
