The best-known and oft-considered greatest French writer is unarguably Victor Hugo. His romance novels and stories have withstood the test of language and time. One of Hugo’s most popular stories is ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’; a tale of a gypsy who catches the hearts of men including a hunchback named Quasimodo. This work has been transformed into dozens of stage, film, and television adaptations.

This 1831 three-volume edition was published the same year as the first edition. In fact, the popularity of ‘Notre Dame’ forced publishers to print many editions very quickly. This particular edition was printed by Louis Hauman in Brussels as part of the complete works of Hugo; however, this set is entirely complete in itself ending with the expected ‘Marriage of Quasimodo’.
