At the end of August 1812, a few days before the Battle of Moscow, Davidov, who at the time was a Colonel of Hussars, obtained permission to harass the lines of French communication. This event was recorded in ‘Essai sur la Guerre de Partisans’ and describes methods of disrupting enemy communication beginning in the Thirty Years War.
