James Silk Buckingham was a notable 19th-century English author who is best known for his reports on slave trade in Africa and the New World. He traveled throughout the world, in India, China, and the Middle East, and published accounts of his findings and discoveries. However, his works on slavery in the United States are without question his most important.

His book ‘The Slave States of America’ is an 1842 description of life in America from his travels across the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama to see firsthand the treatment of slaves and Native Americans. Buckingham records climate, geography, flora and fauna, but also describes the use of slaves in industries as diverse as gold mining, cotton factories, railways, and agriculture, while highlighting the social and political issues surrounding free labor, and relations between slaves and their owners.

This important first edition is complete with eight full-page steel engravings.
