The United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, or the Wilkes Expedition, was a surveying journey which helped develop marine and oceanography sciences in the 19th-century. One of the smaller ships in the expedition was the USS Flying Fish which accompanied the journey toward Antarctica. Little is known of the events on the Flying Fish, and the poem by James Croxall Palmer ‘Thulia’ is the only surviving account of the Flying Fish on that expedition.

Thulia’ is a curious pairing of two poems and music of the United States exploration of Antarctica. It also happens to be the earliest forms of poetic literature on Antarctica ever published!
