Frederick Marryat came by his marine knowledge firsthand, having been an English Royal Navy officer. A contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, he is remembered today as an early pioneer of the sea story. One of his best works was his “Travels of Monsieur Violet in California” – an adventure story describing voyages in Sonoma to Western Texas. Marryat gained much of his understanding of Southwest United States from articles included in the “Texas Santa Fe expedition” and the Raines Texas bibliography.

Nevertheless, this work is an exciting adventure story that thoroughly describes interactions with Native American Indian tribes, Mexicans, and American settlers.
