Thomas McKenney’s “Memoirs” is one of the best mid-19^th-century accounts of travels among Native American Indians! “McKenney was appointed superintendent of the US trade with the Indian tribes…. He had great faith in the fundamental worth of the Indian, and has much to say in regard to the ‘abominable abuse of power’ of the government with the Indians. In 1826 he made an extensive trip in order to negotiate a treaty with the Chippewa Indians.”
