William Stirling Maxwell was a 19th-century Scottish historian known for his annals on the lives of Spanish artists, Charles V, and even Napoleon. It was, however, his collection of Middle Eastern poems that have set him apart from other such historians. ‘Songs of the Holy Land’ is a collection of verse poetry on various topics from Palestine and Israel including:
- Isaac and his wives
- Jael and the Battle of Mount Tabor
- Jephthah
- Rizpah the concubine of Saul
- King Shallum, 8th-century BC king of Israel
- The dry bones in the story of Ezekiel
- Apocryphal figure of Judith
