Harper’s Magazine is a 19th-century monthly periodical of literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts. Launched in June 1850, it is the second-oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the U.S.

This volume is quite important in that it features the notable work – The first publication of any part of Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” ‘The Town-Ho’s Story,’ chapter 54 of the novel, at that time titled ‘The Whale.’ “Moby Dick” went on to be published in its entirety the fall of 1851, published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1851.

This issue of ‘Harper’s New Monthly Magazine: No. 2 and 3, December 1850 to November 1851,’ contains contributions by Charles Lever, the Arctic, fashion, crime, wolves and animals, European history and Napoloen, Reynard the Fox, fantasy stories, and many others beside. This issue is full of over 300 excellent illustrations as well.

“The extent and quality of illustrations uniquely characterized Harper magazines. The monthly had “the most striking pictures for many years,” especially of exotic places, and thus faced “no competition” until the 1870s, according to the firm’s historian J. Henry Harper” (p. 88)
