A beautiful Holy Bible published in Belfast in the 19^th-century. Ornate family Bibles were quite popular in the second half of the 1800s, and this tome is a fine example of stunning family Bibles. This example is known as the Douay Bible, which refers to the Douay-Rheims translation from Vulgate Latin into English. It was first published in the 16^th-century by the English College in Douai, France, hence the name. These bibles were popular throughout the Catholic world in a time when most English bibles were Protestant backed.

 

This particular Douay Bible was collected and edited by Irish primate William Crolly, Archbishop of Armagh and published in Belfast, Ireland (prior to the Partition of Ireland).
