William Hosmer’s “Slavery and the Church” is a pre-Civil War condemnation of slavery in America and the church’s role should be. Hosmer describes the function of slavery in an American society, but focuses heavily on its sin and why it is a sin. He also, unlike pro-slavery advocates, notes that the Old and New Testaments do not sanction slavery but rather describe the concept of slavery in Bible times.

One of Hosmer’s most compelling and, certainly, most controversial perspectives was that “slave owners cannot be Christians”. He curiously says that slaves also cannot be Christians in the same section. A curious, but important first-edition abolitionist treatise.
