James Cowles Prichard was one of the most prolific 19^th-century English ethnologists much in part to his studies in natural selection in humans. He wrote important surveys of evolutionary sciences and theories including both ‘Physical History of Man’ and ‘Natural History of Man’. The latter, which proved to be one of the best works on monogenism, describes the commonalities and differences in humans with an emphasis in physical traits.

The illustrations from Prichard’s ‘Natural History of Man’ are some of the most desirable of their kind! They include views of various Native American Indian tribes such as Iroquois and Algonquin, natives of Papua islands, skulls of ancient Eskimos, Mandara and Borneo natives, Samoans, Solomon Islanders, Chileans, and even engravings of early native Californians!
