1856 Pacific Exploration Botany MAP Zoology Cactus Sequoia California Redwoods
Beginning in 1855, the United States Congress published reports and surveys of certain railroad routes from the Mississippi River westward to the Pacific. Per Larned,
“Narrative reports of many officers on various routes, giving much information concerning the western country. The publication of the reports being chiefly in the form of original journals, kept day by day, gives them a certain accuracy that might have been lost had the writers more frequently indulged in general descriptions.
This work includes an enormous folding botanical chart and 59 plates! In addition to the illustrations, this volume covers J.M. Bigelow’s botanical and arboreal discoveries throughout the American west. The list of contents is extensive, however, Whipple describes:
- Descriptions of soils, trees, cactuses, mosses, etc.
- Sequoias, Giant Redwoods
- Zoological discoveries and animal behaviors
- Grizzly and black bears
- Lynx
- Beavers & porcupines
- Antelope & deer
- Astronomical observations and tables
