- Edwin W. Luce was a First Lieutenant in the Illinois 9th Volunteer Cavalry, Company H during the American Civil War. The unit was mustered into service in 1861 and was discharged in 1865. Future governor of Minnesota Samuel Rinnah Van Sant served in the regiment, as did future Nebraska governor Albinus Nance and future Wisconsin legislator Stewart J. Bailey.
