Austin Steward as a 19th-century American author who was born in Virginia into slavery. However, in his early 20s, Steward escaped from Virginia slavery to a Quaker community in Canada. In 1857, he published a memoir of his life – “Twenty-Two Years a Slave, Forty Years a Freeman” – a slave narrative which describes the events leading to his escape and life living in freedom.
