Reynard the Fox has been a staple of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as Germany, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his ‘birth-place.’ Told as a brute-epic, this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15^th– and early 16^th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9^th-century!

Thomas James Arnold was a barrister and writer, best known for his translations from Goethe and the classics. This 19^th-century English edition of ‘Reynard the Fox’ is a translation of Geothe’s Reineke Fuchs, which was based upon Gottsched’s prose version of the Low German poem Reinke de Vos which includes numerous illustrations by the famous Wilhelm Von Kaulbach and Joseph Wolf.
