Frank Moore edited and collected one of the most important sources on Civil War documents – ‘The Rebellion Record’. This work includes documents, maps, portraits, and war-time advertisements. The majority of this work consists of official reports from various battles, including the Battle of Bull Run, as well as letters and speeches of American politicians. Moore also includes a printing of Napoleon Bonaparte’s proclamation of neutrality given decades earlier.

According to Sabin,

“This work is an impartial embodiment of all that is valuable on the subject, and is for the Rebellion what Almon’s ‘Remembrancer’ is for the Revolution.”

Provenance: This particular example was owned by Sacramento surgeon, John F. Morse. Morse opened a hospital and was a critical figure in treating patients in the 1850 cholera outbreak in California. Later, he became a newspaper editor and wrote numerous articles on gold discovery, as well as many medical essays.
