William Rosecrans was a 19th-century U.S. Army officer who served in the Civil War under Ulysses S Grant. While leading the Army of the Cumberland in the Tennessee campaign, Rosecrans was met with disaster as the Confederates broke through his lines and ultimately forced the Union out of Tennessee. Shortly after these events, General Grant removed Rosecrans from his post, taking away his command and reassigning him elsewhere.

 

Rosecrans wrote a memoir of sorts of his experiences in Tennessee, focusing primarily on the famed Battle at Stones River, more commonly known as the Battle of Murfreesboro. One of the deadliest battles of the Civil War, Stones River saw Braxton Bragg of the Confederates make costly mistakes.

 

Rosecrans’s “Report” is the best account of the battle and the ultimate failure of the Union in Tennessee – a true first-hand account of Murfreesboro.

 

This 1863 first edition of Rosecrans’ report was published in Washington shortly following the Union disaster in Tennessee. Includes two folding maps at the end.
