Samuel Sloan was a 19th-century American architect who is best-remembered for his architecture books. These books, which included stunning illustrations, were intended to illustrated houses, churches, and schools with designs for an American style, separate from more traditional European architecture. Still, the works included trends that were evocative of classical art (i.e. Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders), but held a purely American feel.

 

“Constructive Architecture” was Sloan’s “guide to the practical builder and mechanic” which included dozens of full-page, detailed plates. This 1866 edition includes not only examples of how to build certain structures, but also how to correct common problems that arise in construction.
