Charles Henry Davis’s “Reports on Interoceanic Canals and Railroads” is a rare 19^th-century account of engineering and construction of canals and railroads in South America. In 1866, Davis, an American naval surveyor, was hired to help create interconnecting canal routes from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. His ‘Report’ proved to be an invaluable resource in the establishment of Central American canals, most notably the Panama Canal (which is covered in this 1867 edition.) This work contains 14 enormous folding maps of Central American countries, coastlines, and waterways.
