Kautz served under both generals Bulter and Grant and was highly favored by President Lincoln. It was, however, his books of civil War customs that has given him lasting fame. He published two separate works detailing the customs of both non-commissioned soldiers as well as those of commissioned officers.
This 1868 edition of “Customs of Service for Officers” covers the duties of officers, the roles of each specific office, organization of the United States military, military discipline, instructional tactics, and much more.
