A rare collection of three volumes of the Vanity Fair Album. Vanity Fair is best known then and today for a full-page, color lithograph of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary. Subjects included artists, athletes, royalty, statesmen, scientists, authors, actors, soldiers, religious personalities, businesspeople and scholars. More than two-thousand of these images appeared, and they are considered the chief cultural legacy of the magazine, forming a pictorial record of the period. They were produced by an international group of artists, including Max Beerbohm, Sir Leslie Ward, the Italian Carlo Pellegrini, Melchiorre Delfico and Liborio Prosperi, the French artist James Jacques Tissot, and the American Thomas Nast.

“The Vanity Fair Portraits are and remain the only work of their kind ever attempted; and as such they must always hold a special and distinct place as a permanent record of men of eminence in the nineteenth century” (Junior)

These 19th century editions include 138 full page color plates of famous persons including Charles Spurgeon, Prince Leopold, Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, and more!
