The HMS Rosario was an important gunship in the Royal Navy in the 1860s and 70s best-known for its fight against illegal kidnapping, or blackbirding, slaves from the South Seas islands. Commanded by George Palmer, this ship detained numerous vessels on suspicion of kidnapping slaves. Palmer wrote a biographical sketch of his time on the Rosario and told of his encounters with slave-runners and kidnappers.
