“The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite.”

Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne’s adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. Known mostly for his works of science fiction, ‘Voyages Extraordinaires’ was Verne’s largest collection of fantasy novels and stories.

This 1874 English edition of some of Verne’s shorter and lesser-known works was published under the title “From the Clouds to the Mountains”. In this book, A.L. Alger includes portions of Verne’s “Dr. Ox” as well as shorter, early Verne works –

  • “Master Zachary”
  • “A Winter in the Ice-Fields”
  • “A Drama in Mid-Air”

He also includes a report from Paul Verne (Jules’s brother) and his expedition ascending Mont Blanc.

This 1874 first American edition was published in Boston and was also the first English translation to feature illustrations.
