1875 Jules Verne 1ed Wreck of the Chancellor + Martin Paz French Hetzel Voyages
“Reality provides us with facts so romantic that imagination itself could add nothing to them.”
― Jules Verne
Jules Verne’s adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. Known mostly for his works of science fiction, ‘Voyages Extraordinaires’ was Verne’s largest collection of fantasy novels and stories. Verne’s ‘Wreck of the Chancellor’ is the story of the final voyage of British sailing ship the Chancellor, told from the perspective of the diary one of its passengers. At the beginning of its voyage, the Chancellor carried eight passengers and twenty crew members, but tragically, by the end, only eleven people remained alive.
This undated first Hetzel edition was published alongside Verne’s ‘Martin Paz’, a short story of Jewish man promising his daughter to a Catholic man in Peru. This issue is the first issue to include the ‘JV – JH’ initials on the front cover. Note that the 1875 first edition dating is found in the ads at the end.
