1876 UTAH Exploration 1ed Simpson HUGE Railroad Maps PAIUTE INDIANS California
James Hervey Simpson was a 19th-century American explorer and engineer who was an important catalyst in the topographical discoveries of the American west. His railroad surveys helped establish northern routes in the Dakotas, Utah, Montana, Idaho, and Washington, all of which helped produce some of the most detailed maps of these territories. These maps and subsequent railroad distance charts, contributed to more people traveling and exploring western states and territories like Utah.
According to Howes on Simpson’s exploration route:
“This route, explored in 1859, shortened the distance to California by 250 miles; it was adopted by the overland mail, pony express and telegraph. The report was submitted in 1861, but publication had to be deferred because of the Civil War. Portions however appeared in the author’s ‘The Shortest Route to California’.”
His “Report of Explorations Across the Great Basin of the Territory of Utah” included these maps and charts, but also included a memoir of the Native Indian Tribes in the Utah Territory including descriptions of the Paiutes, Shoshones, and Goshutes.
