1878 Mycenea 1ed Tiryns Archaeology Homer Iliad Excavation Schliemann ART
Heinrich Schliemann was a German archaeologist known for his studies of Troy, Mycenae, and Tiryns in the 19th-century. Archaeological digs were not unique to the 1800s; however, Schliemann was interested in proving that the events in Homer’s ‘Iliad’ occurred. Dr. Schliemann was the first man to begin to excavate Hisarlik, the site which is believed to be where ancient Troy stood. Schliemann claimed to have discovered treasures and even the tomb of Agamemnon. Dr. Heinrich Schliemann started the excavations and analyses of the most important sites of Bronze Age Greece and published his work “Mycenea” as a seminal work in classical archaeology.
In his book ‘Mycenea’, Schliemann gives an account of his excavations, his findings, and reports on hundreds of objects found – weapons, clothing, art, and other such oddities. Also included are an astounding 568 illustrations!
