Unsure? Ask an Expert!

The Military Operations of General Beauregard in the War Between the States 1861 to 1865” by Alfred Roman offers a comprehensive and laudatory portrayal of Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, the one responsible for ordering the bombardment of Fort Sumter, the opening barrage of the Civil War. Within, Roman emphasizes Beauregard’s strategic brilliance in key Civil War battles and his prior military achievements, including his role in the Mexican–American War. Interestingly, Beauregard’s tumultuous relationship with President Jefferson Davis is also explored, suggesting that it may have impeded his military utilization. Despite its uncritical tone and Beauregard’s personal contributions to the text, this two-volume set provides an informative narrative of the general’s varied career, from his impactful military service to his post-war endeavors in civil rights advocacy, railroad management, and the Louisiana Lottery. Notably, Beauregard himself endorsed the work in the preface, appreciating its thorough documentation of his military services and acknowledging the assistance received in gathering accurate facts and data.
