The Legendary History of the Cross’ is a book of a series of 64 woodcut illustrations from a Dutch book published by Veldener in 1483 with an introduction written and illustrated by John Ashton and a preface by written by S. Baring Gould. Gould prefaces the book with an examination of where the legends surrounding the cross might have come from including Viking mythology as well as eastern Asian folklore.

Ashton breaks down the legend itself examining the story of the cross’ origin with Adam and Seth in the Garden of Eden, to becoming the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified, and then found by the mother of Constantine through visions and worshipped as a Holy Relic that had supernatural power. The 15th century legend depicts views from its era with its types of miracles including raising people from the dead, healing the sick, and causing “black people to become white.”
