- Captain William Saxton (1841-1917) served in Company C of the 157th New York Volunteer Infantry (1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 11th Army Corps) during the American Civil War. The unit was present at the Battles of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. On the first day at Gettysburg, they suffered in heavy fighting north of the town. On the second day, they served as a reserve regiment rushed to the aid of the 137th New York holding the right flank on Culp’s Hill. Due to the capture, injury, or death of the officers of higher rank within the unit, Saxton would lead the company from Gettysburg until the end of the war. The unit was also responsible for guarding the “Immortal 600” Confederate officers at Fort Pulaski, Georgia. Saxton would later publish his reminiscences, pulled largely from his service diary he kept during the war, in serialized format from 1901-1902. They were compiled and published as A Regiment Remembered: The 157th New York Volunteers in 1995. According to the provenance, this 3-volume set was gifted to Capt. Saxton by the state of New York.
