“My hope, my heaven, my trust must be, My gentle guide, in following thee.”

– Sir Walter Scott, Lady of the Lake

Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet. Many of his works, such as “Ivanhoe”, remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. “Ivanhoe” tells the story of 12th-century English knight during the Crusades and the reign of King Richard. Scott explores themes of chivalry, witchcraft, and anti-Semitic sentiments through the lens of a popular period of legend in England.

While countless examples of “Ivanhoe” are available to read and purchase, few, if any, are as rare as this example. Published in the early 20th-century, this Merrill and Baker edition was limited to only 26 copies – one designated for each letter of the alphabet. This particular example is noted as copy “S” and is bound in exquisite, decorative, Moroccan green leather. Truly a masterpiece of literature and display.
