Booker T. Washington was a famous 19^th-century American civil rights activist known for his anti-slavery platform during the height of Negro lynchings in the American South. Born as a slave child during the American Civil War, Washington describes his difficulties and obstacles in his autobiography ‘Up From Slavery’. This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

Following the successes of “Up From Slavery”, Washington wrote a sequel entitled “Working with the Hands” in which he described his experiences teaching at Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. This 1904 first edition contains 32 full-page photographs from Frances B. Johnston.
